A PUNK WITH PROVENANCE: BAYC Member PipeHitter And His Wife Purchase Bill Murray's CryptoPunk!

In Zombieland, Bill Murray was famously asked if he had any regrets. His answer? “Garfield, maybe.” But after this sale, he might have another one to add to the list!
On Friday, the Ghostbusters and Caddyshack star sold his CryptoPunk to Bored Ape Yacht Club member PipeHitter and his wife for 46.69 ETH or about $87,000 USD!
“My wife and I are both very excited to have acquired Cryptopunk #5530, formerly from the Bill Murray collection. We enjoy investing in digital art, with Apes and Punks being our most prized pieces. But we’re big fans of Bill Murray too. The fact that he held this Punk for years adds an extra layer of coolness to it.”
CryptoPunk #5530 is a three-attribute male Punk with a silver chain, a front beard, and a thin mohawk. Based on these traits, the Punk ranks as the 3,431st rarest in the collection, but PipeHitter believes its star-studded orgin story makes it even more valuable.
“Can’t help but think the provenance adds significant value though, having been owned by one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood,” he said. “It turns a valuable work of art into an even more interesting conversation piece. We’re expecting as much, anyway, as soon as we hang a print in our home.”
Murray’s Punk sale comes two and a half years after he first acquired the JPEG back in October 2022.
Looking ahead, PipeHitter told the Gazette that he and his wife have no plans to sell Murray’s old Punk anytime soon. In fact, they recently picked up the V1 version of CryptoPunk #5530 from BAYC member Buuvei to complete the set!
"Buuvei sold me the v1 to complete the pair too," PipeHitter said. "Hes a solid ape. I made the whole move on a handshake he'd sell me the v1 2 days later after Token conference."
