It’s a sad day for style around the swamp and across the broader Web3 world after Bored Ape Yacht Club member DevAllo announced that he’s shutting down his popular platform, Bored Closet, after no longer being able to afford keeping it running.

“It’s time to hang up the hangers,” Bored Closet tweeted this morning. “With heavy hearts, we’re announcing that the Closet is shutting down. We’ve reached a point where we’re no longer able to keep it running. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who supported us and made the Closet what it was.”

From seasonal fits to daily GM outfit of the day posts, Apes and creators across Web3 relied on Bored Closet’s overlays and AI powered tools to accessorize their NFTs, connect with one another, and express themselves in ways only fashion can.

Following the announcement, members across the ecosystem reflected on what Bored Closet meant to the space and what the end of community staples like this mean for Web3 going forward.

“Seeing Allo shutting down @boredcloset is one of those moments that makes you stop and think about this space and where we’re heading,” ApeChain’s Sloooths Founder Pequelord tweeted. “That website helped so many communities get visibility, experiment, and engage with their NFTs, most of the time almost for free, driven by passion, curiosity, and love for Web3… It’s a shame when projects like this disappear while attention keeps flowing to hype, FOMO, and short-term dopamine. I get it, that rush feels good. But, if we want this space to grow up, we need to start supporting things that are future-proof, not just flashy... Real founders. Real builders. Real believers.”

After the outpouring of support, Allo took to the timeline to explain that while Bored Closet was popular, it was never able to turn a profit.

“After 2 years of building @boredcloset, it became clear how hard it is to turn a product into a revenue-generating business. I invested high five figures of my own money and never made a single dollar from it. It was always meant to be something positive for the web3 space, something we could all enjoy daily. But all good things come to an end, as financially it’s no longer sustainable for me personally.

Longtime BAYC member and business lead for BAYC inspired burger brand Bored N Hungry also chimed in, reminding the community that behind every bootstrap Web3 project offering free tools is a real builder trying to keep the lights on.

“For years, we are spoiled of using it to dress up our apes For years, we are blessed to have a platform that highlights MBA brands for FREE For years, we are using it for our GM art But behind all these cool monkey JPEG edits, we don’t see the costs of running a free-for-all platform like this at the back And now it has to shut down. It’s sad. rom the bottom of my heart, thank you, @boredcloset.”

The Gazette will continue to follow Allo and will keep readers updated on what he does next around the swamp and beyond.
