The Otherside Resource Game is more than just a game. It’s the backbone of an open metaverse that players actually own!

On Thursday, following Yuga Labs’ post revealing that the first iteration of its highly anticipated Resource Game would be coming to Otherside later this year, Yuga Labs CEO Michael Figge and Otherside Lead James Hall hopped on a Space to talk about everything from what Otherside is to how this game fits into their bigger vision for the platform.

“We are starting to rev the engines of Otherside,” Hall said. “This has been a project four years in the making, and we are excited to start sharing what we’ve been working on to an extent.”
To kick things off, Hall confirmed that all 74 Otherside resources will be their own tokens onchain, and that Kodas and Mega Kodas will have central roles to play in the metaverse, while characters from around the swamp and beyond will have roles of their own.
“Otherside is a next generation token economy made up of 74 onchian resources,” Hall said. “They are going to be onchain…The only way in and out of the Otherside economy is $Ape. You’ve heard us say over and over again that ApeCoin is the coin of the realm.”
As the Space continued, Hall answered questions about the game’s mechanics. While everything isn’t fully fleshed out yet, he did say that Otherdeed holders will be able to make decisions that can either attract or repel other players from harvesting resources on their land.

He also emphasized that exploring this strange new world will be a core pillar of the experience.
“I really want folks to feel the magic of exploration,” Hall said.

To Yuga Labs, the Resource Game is so much more than just a fun activation or something to do onchain. It will be the backbone of everything they hope to build going forward.
“What we are doing right now is fine tuning what the loop of the game is and what this experience is” Hall said. “One of the biggest things in my mind when people talk about or say ‘Oh Otherisde’s a Resource Game,’ that’s just the backbone. That would be like saying our world is just fossil fuels game… this is just how we can get the world going and how we can build things that make this world possible.”
Tonight, we still don’t know how the Resource Game will fit into Otherside’s overarching lore or exactly when we’ll be able to start traversing the metaverse.
But Hall did say that the first iteration of the game will feature 600 Yuga Labs owned Otherdeeds that the community can explore, that players will need to use their own “StarPod” ships to get around, and that they will actually own what they find and build in Otherside.
