CLOSING A CHAPTER: OpenPage To Shut Down After Three Years Of Building A Social Layer For The Open Metaverse

It was a somber day around the swamp on Tuesday after crypto native social platform OpenPage announced that it would officially closing down, bringing an end to its three year efforts to build a social layer for what the team believed would become an open, interoperable metaverse.

“After careful consideration, we've made the difficult decision to sunset OpenPage,” the team wrote. “We believed the Open Metaverse would emerge as a shared, interoperable layer across ecosystems, and for the last three years we've been building toward that vision. Over time, it became clear that this vision has not materialized in the way we expected.”

 

 

The team went on to explain that, as the crypto world changed, it no longer saw a sustainable path forward for OpenPage.

“At the same time, the infrastructure OpenPage was built on has evolved in a different direction,” they wrote. “ApeChain is increasingly focused on serving as the infrastructure layer for Otherside, with a vertically integrated approach to tooling and ecosystem development. As a result, there is less opportunity for independent third-party platforms like OpenPage to build sustainable products within that ecosystem.”

 

As the Gazette previously reported, OpenPage, originally launched as OtherPage, has been a staple of the NFT ecosystem since 2023, giving creators everywhere the chance to find and connect with their biggest fans.

“Our vision is to make OpenPage the home of creators everywhere,” the project’s Founder Nova previously told the Gazette. “A place built for creators of all sizes and backgrounds to gather their communities, unlock new ways to engage, and turn everyday followers into lifelong superfans. It’s where fans carry their digital identity across worlds, and where creators finally own the tools, data, and relationships that power their work.”

Over the years, OpenPage connected thousands of users and hundreds of communities through badges, NFT drops, wearables, customizable creator pages, and more.

“It was quite a journey building this platform with @0xm1kr and the team and giving it everything we had for more than two years,” Nova tweete. “ During that time we: - Grew OpenPage to more than 25,000 users and 800 communities. It became one of the most feature-rich creator platforms in Web3, spanning everything from a full 3D avatar and wearable system to a robust community engagement platform. - Raised seven figures across multiple ecosystem grants, each time starting from a significant deficit and rallying key voters to get us across the finish line. A special thank you to the community members who supported us, and to the ApeCoin DAO members who funded our work through our AIPs. The BAYC and ApeCoin ecosystem supported the product and got meaningful utility from it for more than 2.5 years. We shipped everything we promised, and then some. We completed our AIPs in March 2025 with roughly another year of runway remaining. We could have chased the next shiny opportunity, but we chose to keep building and give the original vision every chance to work. A year ago, I probably would have blamed ApeCo and the direction of ApeChain, but today I’m not convinced OpenPage would have succeeded on another chain either.”

 

Looking ahead, OpenPage plans to pause all new badge and collectible minting over the next two weeks before officially sunsetting the platform on August 31. During that time, the team also plans to address OP Pass holders and users with unused platform credits.

“We'll be sharing additional details on those topics over the coming weeks with the goal of making the process as clear and fair as possible,” they said.
