“ENJOY THE HOUSE BAYC BOUGHT YOU”: Yuga Labs Co-Founder Garga Fires Back At Pranksy After He Says Bored Apes "Ruined" NFTs

Inversebrah, get in here lil shid!

The Bored Ape Yacht Club’s biggest minter and the project’s Co-Founder Garga were going back and forth Sunday over whether the NFTs that changed their lives helped or hurt the NFT space.

Things were anything but boring on Sunday as collectors across the timeline shared their takes on the impact Bored Apes had on NFTs, the underlying technology, and what the collection’s legacy will be going forward.

Crypto’s newest anonymous main character, Ossen, argued that Apes were bad for the space because,“They sold art as a status ticket, let celebrities shill it, printed a coin, burned millions in gas, got richer while holders rode 150 to 6.”

Meanwhile, collectors like Mudtooth argued the opposite, saying BAYC “gave NFTs culture, identity, community and mainstream attention at a time when most people still thought NFTs were just JPEGs.”

As everyone shared their takes, Pranksy said that these primates tainted the tech behind NFTs.

“BAYC ruined NFTs,” Pransky tweeted. “A technology with actual potential became known worldwide as the ape thing and all we saw were copy and paste projects for years.”

While plenty of people have negative opinions about Bored Apes and their place in the space, not every negative post gets a reply from Garga.

This one did.

Garga found Pranksy’s take particularly rich considering the 1,250 Bored Apes he minted way back in 2021 helped make him really rich.

“Brother you sold what could have been 500 million dollars worth of apes for a few million and proceeded to shill any dogshit copy pasta you could find And you founded numerous NFT co’s of your own, all of which have since been removed from your bio,” Garga said. “Be the change you want to see in the world or enjoy the house BAYC bought you.”

Garga’s post went on to ratio Pranksy’s by roughly 7X, getting more than 2,000 likes compared to Pranksy’s roughly 360, and BAYC members were happy to see Garga standing up for his creation.

“Refreshing to witness a founder recite the lore when the others try to rewrite,” BAYC Member Swickie tweeted. “Miss this BIIIG fuck it and fuck you attitude in the club. Miss you Garga.”

Following Garga’s post, Pranksy returned to the timeline with a longer and less inflammatory take, arguing that people like himself, Garga, Beeple, and NBA Top Shot all benefitted from a perfect storm of tech, Covid lockdowns, and government stimulus checks.

“Slightly better wording: BAYC and it's success ruined what could have been for NFTs,” he said.  “Not really through any fault of the founders, they, much like myself (with timing of various mints), got very lucky. @NBATopShot and the Beeple 69 Mil had already set the wheels in motion. BAYC (as I said at the time) got the pricing structure right, and had visuals that myself, Jim and others could see were profile picture proof. The unrelenting success of this format changed the future of NFTs, and their perception by the wider population. Arguably drowning out the chance for other experimental projects.”

Whether BAYC ruined NFTs, made NFTs, or simply became so successful that it defined NFTs is all up for debate.

The Gazette will continue to follow today’s discourse surrounding BAYC and its impact on the space it helped build. Stay tuned for updates!
