Things are anything but boring around the swamp as Bored Ape Yacht Club members celebrate five years of being the best club on the internet!

On this day, April 23, 2021, co-founders Gordon Goner, Garga, Tomato, and Sass invited everyone into the swamp with a simple promise, holders would own their Ape’s IP, there would be no bonding curve pricing, and the project would be equal parts community, culture, and chaos.

“The Bored Ape Yacht Club #NFT Pre-Sale is now LIVE! Gas is cheap. Come ape with us. (Update your cache if it doesn't show up for you.)”

“I'm really excited about this project,” Longtime. BAYC member and minter of Bored Ape #26 iRiSh tweeted at the time. “No bonding curve - Same price for everyone, No Ape Reveal yet so all NFT is random. Membership to a community of Bored Apes in the Yacht club.”

No one knew it then, but the Bored Ape Yacht Club was about to take over the world.

The project would go on to mint out on May 1, 2021, ushering in a new class of crypto participants made up of Top Shot degens, artists who loved IP, and people just looking for frens during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the months that followed, the club adopted a motto of “fuck doing expected things,” embarking on a journey that surprised and delighted holders at every turn. That included airdropping Bored Ape Kennel Club dogs, launching Mutant Apes, creating onchain treasure hunts, hosting ApeFests around the world, building Otherside, introducing ApeCoin, and growing into not just the face of NFTs, but crypto itself.

And they’re not stopping there. While there have been ups and downs over the last five years, the vibes are immaculate heading into today’s anniversary celebration.

Yuga Labs’ longtime Chief Creative Officer Michael Figge has stepped in as CEO, Garga has returned to focus on storytelling as Chairman of the Board, grail Apes are getting scooped, and the community continues to meet up around the world, all while awaiting the grand opening of the highly anticipated clubhouse in Wynwood, Miami.

“Five years is a long time on the internet,” the BAYC tweeted. “It’s long enough to understand what makes something different, and to recognize when it becomes part of people’s lives in a real way. The Bored Ape Yacht Club has always been more than something you scroll past. It’s something people step into, build with, and carry with them. That’s what makes this a Club.”

Looking ahead, the club plans to double down on collecting, community, and what it truly means to be a “Yacht Club.”

“We’ve also been thinking about what it actually means to be a Yacht Club - not just the name, but the feeling behind it.That’s starting to take shape. From here on out, you’ll see it show up more clearly in our apparel, our collaborations, and an aesthetic that finally does the Yacht Club name justice. Five years in, and we’re not slowing down. There’s more to share, but for now… thanks for being an Ape. Thanks for being in the Club.”

The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow all things BAYC and looks forward to reporting live from the swamp every single day for years to come. Stay tuned for updates!
