FROM THE SWAMP TO THE STARS: Yuga Labs’ James Hall Talks Transportation In The Metaverse And How Distance Will Play A Role In Otherside!

The Otherside is a big place, with 100,000 deeds stretching from the center island of the Swamp to the stars of the Infinite Expanse. With so many things to do and places to see, Yuga Labs plans to introduce two modes of transportation to the metaverse that can get players, and their treasures, from point A to point B!

Things were anything but boring on Tuesday when Yuga Labs’ Otherside Lead James Hall hosted a Space to talk about Otherside’s two main vehicles, StarPods and StarHaulers.

“Its Part home, part lander, part exploration vehicle,” Hall said. “The Starpod is how you launch, travel return and touchdown across the world. Otherside’s vast, its expansive, and we’ve just started the scratch the edge of what it is with the Nexus and Swamp.

During today’s Space, Hall revealed that every Otherside player will receive a base-model StarPod to explore the world, along with a StarHauler to transport resources found on Yuga Labs’ 600 Otherdeeds to the Koda homeworld of Nexus to craft and sell during the first iteration of the Otherside Resource Game when it launches later this year.

While Hall could not get into much detail about customization or the longer term plans for the two vehicles, he did reveal that Legends of the Mara spacecraft pieces will have a use, players will be able to close off their Otherdeeds to others if they choose, and integrating AI into the experience is top of mind.

Hall also revealed an important distinction between traveling as a player and transporting resources.

Players may eventually be able to get from a faraway Otherdeed back to the Nexus quickly for games and events, but the resources they discover will still have to take “the long way home” aboard a StarHauler.

That means distance and where an Otherdeed is located in relation to the Nexus  will become an important part of this world.

“Iterate, crawl, walk, run. Trying to throw to many things in at the beginning is too much,” he said. “ We need to. Stay focused and improve core loops and the economy. Then as we move forward start to spread things out.”

But with all this talk of the Resource Game and its mechanics, Hall reiterated that Otherside is much more than a game where players simply gather things up.

“If you’re looking at Otherside as just a resource game or economy, you’re missing the bigger picture,” Hall said. I think that’s the backbone of what will drive this experience but I think the magic of Otherside is interoperability and enhance other collections and what they do.”

Looking ahead, Hall plans to keep hosting these talks, breaking down key points, and fielding frens’ questions as we get closer and closer to launch.

“We have a marketing plan of how we want to roll out the details,” Hall said. “ I know we’ve gone silent in the past, but I do want everyone to know that we are working on making sure we unveil a lot of this stuff before the time comes to experience all this stuff. As we go we will keep sharing more.”

The Gazette will continue to follow all things Otherside and will let you know when you can blast off in your StarPod and explore. Stay tuned for updates!
