From cubism to Pop Art with a dash of artificial intelligence, the mint of the year isn’t onchain as Web3 artist Beeple takes over Art Basel with his robotic billionaire dogs that literally “shit” digital collectibles and prints that are reselling for tens of thousands of dollars and causing a stir in the art world and beyond.

The digital and new media art sector at Art Basel is the place to be this year as Beeple’s latest work, Regular Animals, features six robotic dogs resembling Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Beeple himself. The dogs combine AI with photography to create art and occasionally “shit” it out, as part of a process Beeple simply calls Poop.

Each of the six dogs is equipped with a camera that constantly takes photos of their surroundings. The pups use AI to rank their images by uniqueness, then blend the best ones with the worldview of the artist or billionaire they’re modeled after. As the event goes on, the dogs occasionally “shit out” a work of art.

“I am excited for this type of long form generative work as it combines dynamic sculptures, photography and AI into one output where the audience literally becomes part of the artwork just by viewing it,” Beeple tweeted “This speaks to the idea that we will increasingly be viewing the world through the lens of AI.”

Beeple’s artistic statement has resonated with millions, from the traditional art world to mainstream audiences, with outlets like The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and the Associated Press all reporting on it.

"Few works have sparked wonder like REGULAR ANIMALS by @beeple,” Crypto art Collector Cozomo De Medici tweeted. “These autonomous sculptures challenge all we think about perception, culture & influence. 2 from Art Basel's most talked about installation have joined The Medici Collection. Please welcome PICASSO and ANDY_WARHOL”

Former Sotheby’s CEO Tad Smith added that the exhibit is an “inflection point” for digital art, marking a shift from seeking legitimacy to defining culture.

“WHAT DO @beeple ‘S DOGS MEAN? @beeple‘s arresting robot dogs  @ArtBasel are an inflection point in the long arc of contemporary art, a moment when the logic of the medium catches up to the speed of the culture, like one of @elonmusk‘s self-driving cars gone rogue,” he wrote. “Before this moment, digital art sought legitimacy. From now, the art market faces a new reality. The most influential artworks may no longer be static canvases but digital cultural organisms that grow, react, and evolve. @Beeple’s dogs announce the ineluctable arrival of the digital art era in all of its disruptive forms. “Poop” it out, I say.”

In total, Beeple’s Regular Animals exhibit will print and mint 1,024 physicals and 256 NFTs throughout Art Basel and Bored Ape Yacht Club members Guccheetah and Laura were each lucky enough to get one!

“Visited Zero10 on Thursday and it already seemed popular, but coming back on Friday throughout the day and seeing it this crowded was next-level,” Laura tweeted. “ It was easily the one spot where people stopped, stayed, and really engaged. Loved hearing all the reactions! For those that are not here for Art Basel here is a small glimpse of its looked at all hours of the day. Congrats @beeple @eli_schein.”
