NFTs are art. Collectors collect, and so do museums!

From the swamp to the gallery walls, Bored Apes, Twelvefolds, and more are making their mark on art history as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art announces a landmark gift of more than 200 digital artworks!

On Thursday, LACMA announced that members of its Digital Leaders group and other collectors have offered the museum hundreds of digital artwork from over the decades including early computer generated creations to NFTs and AI powered pieces!

“Expanding on the museum’s decades-long exploration of art and technology, this gift will allow LACMA to recontextualize digital art in the canon of art history,” the Museum wrote in a press release. “Ranging from the mid-20th century to the present day, the gifted works represent a diverse range of media and global art practices, including pre-internet era artworks of the mid-20th century and recent examples made with artificial intelligence.”

Among the works included in today’s donation to the museum  are a Bored Ape, a Twelvefold, and a CryptoPunk along with works by Tyler Hobbs, Beeple,  Dmitri Cherniak, and more, accoridng to the LACMA’s press release.

"Digital art belongs within the long arc of art history, not apart from it," LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan said. "With LDL's generosity and leadership, we are building a collection that traces a trajectory of digital arts, launching us toward an innovative future where we can connect digital art to the art of every era and culture represented in our galleries."

Today's announcement builds on LACMA's Digital Leaders initiative, which made headlines in February 2025 when BAYC Members and Kenetic Capital’s Jehan Chu and Jeannie Vu introduced the group's founding members, including some familiar faces from around the swamp, like Yuga Labs CEO Michael Figge, notable CryptoPunk collector and artist BeautyAndPunk, The Sandbox Co-Founder Sebastien Borget, and Beeple!

The formation of this group is a powerful signal that LACMA…continues to engage with the historical importance of digital art and respond critically and constructively to onchain art as a medium,” Chu tweeted at the time. Learning from professionals and veterans from traditional and digital art and assembling generational collections of digital art is the mission of each of LDL’s members.”

Tonight, we do not know which specific Bored Apes, Twelvefold pieces, or CryptoPunks were donated to the 115 year old museum, how they will be displayed, or when. But we do know that getting NFTs into institutions like the LACMA has been a top priority for Yuga Labs!

As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, Bored Apes and Mutant Apes were showcased at the Louvre in Paris during Paris Blockchain Week back in March 2023.

Yuga Labs has also placed CryptoPunks in museums like the Toledo Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami through its Punks Legacy Project, an initiative aimed at donating and placing Punks in contemporary art museums around the world.

The Gazette is working to find out more about which Yuga Labs NFTs are included in the gifts and when collectors can expect to see them at the museum. Stay tuned for updates!
