LORE OR LARP?: Nakamigos Drop Cypherpunk Files Today, Sending Web3 Down A Rabbit Hole That Either Runs Deep Or Goes Nowhere

There are more questions than answers on the timeline tonight after the Nakamigos project announced its new Cypherpunk Files collection, inviting many longtime holders to claim one for free while the rest of Web3 is encouraged to join in on the lore. But be warned, this rabbit hole could run deep or go nowhere.

Mystery and intrigue have always been at the core of crypto. From the very beginning, the unknown identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has fueled endless debate. In more recent years, similar mysteries have emerged in the NFT world from hidden puzzles embedded in Meebits to lingering questions around who created the Nakamigos project and why these self proclaimed “V0 Punks” are so often winked at by industry leaders like Beeple.

While there may not be any answers tonight, longtime holders and Nakamigo believers like Anon think there’s more going on here than meets the eye and that this mint could be pointing toward something bigger!

“They just keep crafting the lore,” he told the Gazette. “Idk if it’s a puzzle or just placeholder cards like Loot. But they seem intent on marketing it today which maybe shows a sense of urgency.”

Since making their first post shortly before 4 P.M. EST, the Nakamigos have shared several Cypherpunk File ID cards. Each features a redacted name, an alias, business ties, associates, localities, influences, evidence, and a “Nakamoto Index.”

While nothing has been confirmed, Anon believes the project could be exploring the Cypherpunk mailing list,  a life real discussion group from the 1990s where early ideas around privacy, digital freedom, and crypto first took shape.

“I think it could be a puzzle to further explore the Cypherpunk mailing list and maybe bring us that much closer to who is really behind Nakamigos and HiFo Labs, that’s managed to remain a mystery for over 3 years.”

Whatever is contained in these files and whatever is unfolding behind the scenes,  holders are split on what it all means. Some see this as extraction, with an anonymous team returning to NFTs for another mint. Others believe it could be the beginning of a broader Nakamigos conspiracy of sorts.

“The key question is not price impact but intent,” CryptoPunk holderDavie Satoshi tweeted. “A surprise release naturally raises questions around timing and strategy, especially while existing initiatives like Cloaks and the trading cards remain relatively quiet. How this mint fits into the broader roadmap matters.

Davie went on to outline both bullish and bearish scenarios for the project, noting that next week’s Node Foundation CryptoPunks event in California could signal what comes next.

At the time of publication, 7,319 of the 9,999 Cypherpunk Files had already been minted. To check out the collection for yourself, visit OpenSea here: https://opensea.io/collection/cypherpunk-files/overview

The Gazette will continue to follow the Cypherpunk Files and will let you know when more information becomes available. Stay tuned for updates.
