MONKEY BUSINESS: Elon Musk “LOLs” At His Famous Bored Ape Yacht Club Profile Photo Post Four Years Later!

Return to Monkee? Sort of!

On Tuesday, X owner and the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, was “laughing out loud” after retweeting an old screenshot from when he changed his profile photo to a troop of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs and tweeted, “I dunno… seems kinda fungible.”

Following Musk’s tweet this afternoon, normies laughed, Apes celebrated their place in the cultural zeitgeist all these years later, and OGs who have been in the Bored Ape Yacht Club since the beginning recalled just how crazy that morning was.

As the Gazette previously reported, while Musk made his post on May 4, 2022, rumors of him joining the BAYC had been circulating around the swamp for months at that point because of his connections to MoonPay.

Back then, the financial technology platform was onboarding celebrities to the BAYC every week, and the platform had recently purchased a solid gold Ape from Chain CEO Deepak Thapliyal for 569 ETH, who tweeted that it might be going to Musk.

“I thought I had it at 690.420 ETH, Thapliyal tweeted following the sale on February 25th. “Oh well..as long as it goes to @ElonMuskI’ll be happy. CC: @moonpay.”

All this was happening as a photo of MoonPay CEO Ivan Soto-Wright meeting with Musk circulated everywhere.

So when Musk changed his profile photo to the collage of Bored Apes that had sold at Sotheby’s for $24.4 million months before, things went insane on the blockchain, with 37 Bored Apes and 106 Mutant Apes selling in the hour after his post at  floor prices of 117 ETH and 25 ETH each!

“This was one of the most insane days of my first cycle,” longitme Club member and Myraid Markets Founder Farokh tweeted.

While today’s post from Musk may just be him poking some fun at nonfungibles, the timing is interesting considering X’s recent trading integration, which now lets U.S. users initiate stock and cryptocurrency trades from the timeline through participating brokerage partners.

Whether that’s something or nothing remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Bored Apes are still a thing in 2026, and some NFT believers think posts like Musk’s could help bring more attention and liquidity back to the space,  like never before!

“NFTs will trigger a parabolic liquidity shockwave so violent that it will make last cycle's bull run look like child's play,” NFT KOL Vangoya tweeted. “You are sleeping on the most violent wealth transfer in modern human history.”

The Gazette will continue to follow Musk and will let you know when, and if, he joins the best club on the internet. Stay tuned for updates!
