Oh the places you POAP’ed!

Whether it was a conference or a get together, Proof of Attendance Protocol NFTs,  better known as POAPs, have been a staple of Web3 for years, giving everyone the chance to mint memories and collect experiences onchain.

But sadly, that era is coming to an end. On Thursday, the brand’s co-founder and general manager, Isabel, took to the timeline with an X article titled “Looking Forward to POAP’s Next Chapter.”

In her post, Isabel announced that beginning on March 16, the platform will go into maintenance mode, which means no new issuers will be able to create POAPs. However, existing creators can keep minting memories, and collectors can still view their POAPs and take trips down memory lane onchain.

“Running POAP has made it clear to us that digital collectibles are still an emerging medium,” she wrote. “The tools that exist today often reflect the constraints of the systems they were built on, rather than the needs of the communities using them. If collectibles are going to become a durable part of how people organize events, recognize participation, and preserve shared moments, they will need better foundations.”

While this era of POAP is coming to a close, it isn’t the end of the company.

Looking ahead, the team hopes to build the foundation they wished was there for them and keep pushing digital collectibles forward.

“We are working on developing a standard for open collectibles, and a platform that offers a canonical implementation,” Isabel wrote. “The goal is to create a system that can sustainably support a truly permissionless model for creating collectibles for anything a community or issuer might want to commemorate. The current version of POAP has taught us a great deal about what such a system needs to support.”

As the Gazette previously reported, POAPs have been a staple around the swamp and beyond for years. In the past, the ApeCoin DAO gave out POAPs to AIP voters, Mutant Mudder owner KaraHoliday sold 1,000 POAPs tied to her limited edition MAYC inspired 2002 Honda Accord that she won as part of the Apes Vs. Mutants Mobile Game, and NFT Paris attendees received an $Ape themed POAP, among many, many, many more!

The Gazette will continue to follow POAPs and will let you know how this news impacts the rest of Web3. Stay tuned for updates!
