Q&A: This AIP Wants To Establish Temperature Check Votes At The ApeCoin DAO

The ApeCoin DAO is voting on an Ape Improvement Proposal this week that hopes to make it possible for builders in the $Ape ecosystem to get a vibe check and gauge the community’s interest on something by establishing guidelines for ‘temperature checks’ votes.

AIP- 366 titled ‘Rules and Framework for Temperature Checks,’ is a process proposal written by ApeCoin DAO Contributor LiveFast9986.

“Temperature checks would allow the community, AIP authors, and others, to gather information by polling the community on a topics to get an understanding of how the community feels about an idea,” LiveFast9986 explained. “While this can be done on any platform, it would be ideal to perform these temperature checks on the same platform (i.e. SnapShot) as normal voting occurs in order to better reach community members who are currently participate in voting for ApeCoin DAO.”

If AIP-366 is passed, the DAO will implement a six-step process for community members to gauge their fellow $Apes interests in ideas or topics. The implementation of AIP-366 will not cost the DAO anything monetarily, according to LiveFast9986.

To find out more about temperature checks and how they would work in the $Ape ecosystem, the Bored Ape Gazette reached out to LiveFast9986 for an interview. Check it out below:

1. In a sentence or two can you sum up your proposal?

“AIP-366 introduces Ape Temperature Checks (ATC), which is a tool designed to allow authors, community members, and others to poll the DAO on a topic in order to get an idea and/or collect data about community sentiment for topic. AIP-366 provides the framework and the rules that govern how to create an ATC, which mirror the process of a regular AIP, and will be placed alongside AIPs on Snapshot. Please note that an ATC is an optional tool, so authors do not need to create an ATC prior to creating/submitting an AIP.”

 2. What inspired you to write this?

“ The idea for for this AIP came about when I began to notice a disconnect between community sentiment on discord, discourse, and spaces, with voting behavior on various AIPs. I began to wonder what does the community at large, the individual members, and the delegates, want ApeCoin DAO to pursue. In order to find the answer to this and other questions, I came to think that polling the community would be the best way to find this and other answers. However, the next question became on how to effectively poll and encourage community members to respond to the poll. Having members respond to a poll will be difficult if it isn't placed in an area where members who regularly voters are likely to see it, wouldn't be too burdensome for them to answer, and would not be subjugated to responses from non-members of our community. Also, there needs to be rules and a framework for how to create a poll that is familiar to our community and our admin team in order to effectively implement this. This AIP present a framework for temperature checks that specifically mimics the AIP process and steps as stated in AIP-1 in order to make making an ATC easier for potential new authors, and familiar for previous AIP authors and to the administrative team who will be reviewing them.”

 3. Why does the DAO need temperature checks on ideas?

“I believe that temperature checks are needed to help foster and create better AIPs that are more aligned with community sentiment, and are what the community actually wants to pursue and approve of. I also believe that temperature checks are needed to help bring in new talent and authors with fresh ideas and new AIPs that are based on polling data from the temperature checks.”

 4. Where do you see this AIP a year from now?

“ I see this AIP as the turning point for the DAO that helped push us forward into the best possible version of ourselves. In a year, we will see regular temperature checks that will indicate the direction in which the community what’s the DAO to take, we will see many more AIPs that are directed towards subject matter and topics that the community want to  pursue, and we will see many AIPs that are a direct result of and/or reference a temperature check was performed and that showed favorable results in the poll. I envision us in a year saying, "why did we do not do this sooner".”

5. What should Apes know about this proposal before they vote?

“This AIP is an OPTIONAL tool designed to help authors provide better AIPs to the DAO. This AIP provides no changes to the AIP process, but rather is a framework for a polling mechanism that offers a lot of flexibility in its way to poll the community. An example of this flexibility is with regards to voting options. An author of an ATC is allowed to choose from a variety of different voting possibilities, such as Ranked choice voting (each voter may select and rank any number of choices. Results are calculated by instant-runoff counting method), Weighted Voting (each voter may spread voting power across any number of choices), or Approval Voting (Each voter may select any number of choices), etc. The default voting option for an ATC will be single choice voting in which 1 wallet = 1 vote, which is the standard for polls, but, as I mentioned earlier, an author can easily change this to fit their polling needs. “

6. Do you have anything else you’d like to add or say?

“We need to have AIP authors better aligned with the community and delegates. I believe that ATCs give us the best tool capable of alignment that will also yield better AIPs and more approved AIPs. I was also on ApeComms last week talking about this AIP and answered many questions from those in attendance: https://x.com/ApeComms/status/1744401891969401290?s=20… If anyone has any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me on twitter/X:

@LiveFast9986 discord:livefast9986.eth or email: livefast9986@gmail.com I hope to receive your support for this AIP.”

The window to vote on AIP-366 is currently open and ApeCoin DAO Contributors have until tonight to cast their coins.

The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow AIP-366 and will let you know how the community votes later tonight. Stay tuned for updates!
