Two CryptoPunks Hit the Auction Block at Sotheby's During Digital Art Day Sale!

Digital art is having its day as two CryptoPunks go up for auction at Sotheby’s as part of the auction house’s Digital Art Day Sale!

On Thursday, 60 nonfungible tokens went up for auction at Sotheby’s as part of its ‘Digital Art Day Sale.’

 

“Sotheby’s is pleased to present our Contemporary Digital Art Day Sale, an exciting event that brings together diverse forms of digital artworks, highlighting the many movements within the digital art landscape and exploring the dynamic interplay between artistic expression and innovative technological novelty,” Sotheby’s VP and Head of Digital Art Michael Bouhanna wrote. “This sale is designed with today's collectors in mind, whether they are emerging buyers eager to explore a broad spectrum of artistic styles or seasoned connoisseurs whose collection transcends traditional categories.”

Among the works by artists like Tyler Hobbs, Snowfro, and Jack Butcher are a pair of female CryptoPunks that are estimated to sell for somewhere between $70,000 and $100,000 USD.

“Embodying the philosophies of pseudonymity, community, and tradability that are essential to the blockchain ecosystem, and further representing the technology’s elegant simplicity, the CryptoPunks journey to non-fungible stardom situates the collection alongside Modern & Contemporary art that seeks to reflect the nascent culture of our time,” Bouhanna wrote. Simultaneously representing the original NFT community in the purest guise, Punks are the vanguard of our generation, challenging the maintained perspectives of artistic and cultural production. Creating a whole new audience for collecting art with digitally native collectors, Punks were born, and will continue to live, immutably, on the Ethereum blockchain."

 

As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, NFTs have been experiencing a bit of a renaissance at Sotheby’s recently.

In July, the auction house sold a gold-fur Bored Ape for $264,000 USD, along with its matching M1 and M2 mutants, a gold-fur Doggo, and several other NFTs during the auction house’s 'Grails: Property from an Iconic Digital Art Collection Part V' auction.
