MEET THE CANDIDATE: Brazy Is Running For Marketing& Communications Working Group Steward!

With 15 years of marketing experience under his belt, fluency in ‘degen,’ and familiarity with building in the $Ape ecosystem through his Forever Apes project, ApeCoin DAO contributor Brazy has thrown his hat in the ring and is running for a spot on the DAO’s Marketing and Communications Working Group this summer. If elected, he hopes to spearhead a creative direction for $Ape that will chart a course for the coin going forward!

The summer election season of 2024 is underway at the ApeCoin DAO, with seven ApeCoin DAO contributors running to be the community’s next Marketing and Communications working Group Steward. Among the candidates vying for this position is Brazy.

“My values in my professional career have always centered around creativity, collaboration, and innovation,” Brazy wrote on his candidate page. “Working in a creative space, you’ll quickly learn that your entire job is to reinvent the wheel - whether working in an industry as innovative as Web3, or something as traditional as legal or construction. The sense of pride in launching a new client project is great, but going into a project that has a specified beginning and end date it can kill excitement and passion for the long term. With ApeCoin, I see it as a long-term brand to be nurtured, a brand that has an entire family and community raising it. Rather than a beginning and end date, we will cycle through stages and cycles of its growth, and this is just the beginning.”

To find out more about Brazy and why he is the right $Ape for the job, the Bored Ape Gazette reached out to him for an interview. Check it out below:

1. In a sentence or two what is your candidacy all about?

“I’ve been creating brands for clients for over 15 years, and there’s nothing I’d love more than to bridge my IRL experiences in Web2 with my passions in Web3. I have a background in creative direction and design which led me to running design teams in the agency world, and I bring a wealth of experience to seeing the big picture of building a brand out end to end.”

2. Why did you decide to run for $Ape office?

“I’ve been on the outside looking in for a while now. Although I’ve been working with the DAO and the community for a while, I am truly ready to go head down and put all my focus into one brand that I’m passionate about. That brand is ApeCoin.”

3. What makes you the right $Ape for the job?

“Brand building is my bread and butter. I’ve worked closely with the current MarComms Stewards and we have completely complementary skill sets. Linstro is amazing at production and content, Popil is amazing at social media and comms, and I feel like I fill a gap with creative direction leadership and big picture vision. My goal would be  to help define the brand bible of ApeCoin both visually and written, and then see it through into the market. Aside from that, I speak fluent degen and understand the web3 community ethos, which will push the needle from a brand and marketing angle vs playing everything safe.”

4. What would you like to accomplish during your term?

“I’d love to spearhead the creative direction of the ApeCoin brand. I feel like there’s currently a disconnect between ApeCoin’s written ‘why’ and the visual direction that we use. I want to see through the big picture of it all and build out a full end to end brand direction, that we can use both internally, within the community, and hand off to sponsorships and collaborations to run with”

5. Why is becoming a Working Group Steward important for you personally?

“The DAO has an amazing team in place right now, and I’d love to be a part of it. I’ve been a contributing member since day one (dating back to WG0 days) and have been working closely with the current iteration of the WGs and past SC members. I’m currently working on the first iteration of the brand direction with the current MarComms Stewards (Linstro and Popil), but I’d love to have an official position and bring my years of experience in to create more creative structure and processes to ensure we’re firing on all cylinders. A creative and energized team creates creative and energized marketing.”

6. What kind of marketing would you like to see the DAO do?

“I’d love to push the needle. I believe we can walk the tightrope between corporate and degen while appealing to our community in a way that truly reflects web3 yet doesn’t detract from the seriousness of what the DAO stands for. That said, I’d shoot for the stars without making unrealistic promises. Speaking from experience, good marketing takes a ton of trial and error, and my driving purpose in the DAO would be to show up every day and try things out until they stick. There’s no recipe, it takes showing up and putting in the time and effort, which I’m committed to doing.”

7. How would you increase transparency at the DAO?

“I feel like the DAO can be mysterious from the outside looking in, I see my role as being the opposite of that. What I intend to build is a complete visual direction that leads to marketing materials and constant content across social channels. Content is king, and I’d love nothing more than to focus on turning words into visuals, show not tell. I’d push for updates in digestible visuals, and highlight key accomplishments. There’s a lot of noise in Web3 and there’s a constant fight for attention, the first step is keeping the community up to speed.”

8. How did you get into crypto?

“Funny story, I actually helped design the world’s first Bitcoin ATM back in 2013 here in Vancouver. A close friend got into crypto very early, and offered me a couple BTC or a few hundred bucks as payment. Of course I took the $$ (roughly $320 USD). This is why pencils have erasers. Fast forward to 2020, I started dabbling and eventually got into NBA TopShot and NFTs and have been hooked on web3 ever since.”

9. What do you like to do outside of Web3?

“There’s life outside of Web3?When I’m not tied up with client projects, I love to travel and be outside (ironic for a guy who spends 12 hours a day on a computer). I had the time of my life in HK for ApeFest, and am looking forward to where the community takes us all next. My top 3 favorite places I’ve been so far are Bali, Switzerland, and Greece. I’m also stuck in the 90s. Some may say a 90s NBA encyclopedia. Show me a jersey and there’s a 90% chance I can name the player on the back.”

10. Do you have anything else you’d like to add or say?

I’m a big believer that seeing is believing in branding and marketing. A solid portfolio of past work is proof. I’d love if everyone took a minute to get to know me, what I do, and view some of the past work I’ve created. I put together a thread for everyone (don’t worry, there’s lots of images) that you can check out here:
