MoMA, We Made It!

Tales of NFTs and digital art’s demise appear to have been greatly exaggerated after the NODE Foundation announced that eight CryptoPunks have been donated to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City!

CryptoPunks, welcome to the  @MuseumModernArt collection,” the Node Foundation tweeted Friday. “Punk 4018, Punk 2786, Punk 5616, Punk 5160, Punk 3407, Punk 7178, Punk 74, and Punk 7899 have found a permanent home at MoMA, where they’ll be preserved and cared for as part of the museum’s history. The collective generosity behind this gift highlights the strength and spirit of the Punk’s community whom has carried the project forward.”

This monumental moment in art history was made possible by the generosity of ArtOnBlockChain, Mara Calderon, CozomoMedici, JudithESSS, NTmoney, Kukulabanze, Rhyd0n, and Larva Labs, who all donated Punks from their personal collections to the 96 year old institution.

After the news broke, CryptoPunk holders filled the timeline with their Punks to commemorate this huge moment for the collection and the digital art space.

“In a space where it can be hard to think even a few months ahead, it’s surreal to look back and realize that nearly four years ago, “Punks x MoMA” became a personal benchmark for what would be the result of thoughtful long-term stewardship of the collection,” Naughtalie Stone tweeted. “Conversations with this institution, and many others, began back then: education and translation….This acquisition by @MuseumModernArt will further cement CryptoPunks in the art canon and ensure the work’s long term preservation and study. But it’s the collectors, builders, and artists who made CryptoPunks what they are, and ultimately, what they will be. That should never be forgotten.”

Tonight, MoMA has not yet tweeted about the acquisition, but the museum has added a Larva Labs section to its website showcasing the eight CryptoPunks. You can check it out here: https://www.moma.org/artists/140561-larva-labs

As the Gazette prevously reported, Yuga Labs sold the CryptoPunks IP and five Punk NFTs to the Infinite Node Foundation back in May 2025, with the stated goals of preservation, community, and expansion for the iconic brand.

The Gazette will continue to follow all things CryptoPunks and will let you know when and how you can see them in person at MoMA! Stay tuned for updates!
