Tad wants Candy!

Tad Smith, Chairman of Doodles and former CEO of Sotheby's, still believes in NFTs. So much so that he’s acquiring onchain collectibles company Candy Digital, home to some of the biggest brands in sports and entertainment, in hopes of revitalizing the platform and pushing digital collectibles forward.

“On Friday I doubled down on my commitment to digital collectibles by agreeing to acquire most of the assets of  @CandyDigitalhttp://Candy.io),” he tweeted. “When the transaction closes in a week or two, I will also serve as CEO… Candy.io will operate by a few simple values on my watch: the Golden Rule for all involved; respect for licensor brands and artists; relentless focus on fan experience; frequent communication often from me.”

Candy Digital has a notable history in Web3.

The NFT platform was launched in 2021, backed by Michael Rubin, Mike Novogratz, and Gary Vaynerchuk.

From the start, the platform secured partnerships with Major League Baseball, DC Comics, Netflix, and more, aiming to bring digital collectibles from big brands to super fans.

At its peak, the platform reached around 1.5 million users, but the NFT bear market over the past few years led to ownership changes and the platofrm was put into maintenance mode sometime last year, and looked to be finsihed, until now.

Tonight, while details about what Tad has planned for Candy are still scarce, he emphasized that this marks a sweet new chapter, not a fresh start, suggesting that past users and collectors have plenty to look forward to!

“More details on the platform, relaunch, and some dazzling new collectibles and #NFTs you can’t get anywhere else are coming as soon as we close the deal,” Tad tweeted. “We’re not starting over on http://Candy.io. We’re picking up something extraordinary and making it better. Please join me to write the next chapter of http://Candy.io. “

Following Tad’s tweets today, artists and collectors across the space took to the timeline to congratulate him on the acquisition and share excitement about what’s next.

“Nothing - and I mean nothing - inspires me more than a good, experienced human expressing conviction in this space,” 24 Hour Art Founder Roger Dickerman tweeted. “When that human takes the reins? Watch out. Inspiration ecosystem.”

The Gazette is working to learn more about all things Candy and will keep you posted on Tad’s plans. Stay tuned for updates!
