Updated: Feb 8, 2022
The Bored Ape Yacht Club announced that a play to earn video game is in the works.
Very stoked to share that we've been working with the gigabrains over at @animocabrands on a p2e game,” The BAYC tweeted earlier this evening. “Can't wait to show more.”
Animoca Brands is a Hong Kong based game software company and venture capital company founded in 2014. While you may have never heard of Animoca Brands before today, its likely that you've heard of one of the company's games, The Sandbox.
The Sandbox game currently holds 31 Bored Apes worth at least 2,454.059 Eth or 9,570,000 USD, according to Evaluate. Market.
The Sandbox's impress ape collection includes Bored Ape #3749. As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, The Sandbox purchased the gold fur laser eyed primate for 740 Eth back in early September.
“We are excited to announce that we will work with @BoredApeYC to create a #P2E blockchain game utilizing Bored Ape #NFTs,” Animoca Brands tweeted earlier this morning.
The new game is expected to release in quarter 2 of 2022, according to Animoca Brands’ press release.
After the announcement, Animoca Brands' Founder/ CEO and BAYC member, Yat Siu, took to Twitter to express his excitement about this partnership.
“A special honor for @animocabrands to be working with the incredible talent over at @BoredApeYC @yugalabs on a really fun p2e #blockchain game, he tweeted. “Few brands represent #NFT culture & community as powerfully as @BoredApeYC who truly embody #NFTs as a store of culture.”
While not much is known about the game or the play to earn mechanics, Siu posted a thread after the announcement detailing his companies relationship with the BAYC and his goal for an “open metaverse.”
“@animocabrands is proud to be collaborating with @yugalabs on the @BoredApeYC game as one of the biggest #NFT cultural icons in the world together with our @TheSandboxGame who boast some of the largest and valuable #BoredApeYachtClub#NFT collection. @TheSandboxGame acquired "The Captain" for 740 eth at the time and boasts a collection of 31 incredible apes together with many other amazing #NFT projects. We aim to build and invest in the #openmetaverse and this is really demonstrated in @TheSandboxGame and why we not only collaborate in productions but also invest to enhance cross metaverses to understand more about this approach a thread.”
At the end of Siu’s Twitter thread, he referenced a post that The Sandbox made earlier this year after the game purchased Bored Ape #3749.
“The Sandbox is a global community for players, virtual artists, and creators,” The Sandbox tweeted on September 7th. “We strongly believe that culture, whether games, music, visual arts, will be one of the pillars of the open crypto #metaverse. We don't just build and sell. We invest and help build the ecosystem. Bored Ape #3749 aka “The Captain” is a perfect example of why NFTs are the intersection of scarcity, art, and gaming. A six trait gold fur ape with a sea captain's hat, a black t-shirt, and of course laser eyes. Based on these traits, Bored Ape #3749 is the 27th rarest ape. But he's not alone... We truly believe in every NFT community project as the biggest creative revolution and changing culture including fashion, art, gaming, entertainment. The estimated net worth of The Sandbox NFT Collection is 3,880 ETH ($13M USD) as of September 2021. Our NFT Collection currently holds 350+ unique NFTs ranging from Crypto Art, Gaming NFTs, Avatar Collections, Fashion, Music, Social, Fashion, and many others. Back to the Ape: An important consideration for any NFT project looking to build in the @TheSandboxGame is "where are my fans?" Fortunately, @baue_and @hueristicalstoc answered this question with their unique overlap maps, showing that the @BoredApeYC community is on our map.
The first reference to a BAYC blockchain videogame was made during the release of Roadmap 2.0. As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, The BAYC referenced a “Top Secret Blockchain Game (BAYC ECOSYSTEM)” as the tenth item on its roadmap.
The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow the development of the BAYC videogame and let you know as more information becomes available.
