For a technology obsessed with the future, NFTs have been surprisingly stuck in a loop. Since 2021, the space has been dominated by generative art. Creators build sets of characteristics, and computers mix and match them to produce thousands of cartoon animals. Some wear hats, others have laser eyes, but nearly all of them are made the same way.

For a space as novel and innovative as blockchain, very little has changed since NFTs’ heyday. That is, until one artist chose the harder, human path, building Del Mundos entirely in real life before bringing it onchain.

“This is not your average JPEG situation,” Del Mundos creator Ray D3lMundos wrote as his first Discord post back on Ocotber 1st 2025. “You’ve been dimension-hopping, questioning reality and now you’ve crash-landed here, at the start of this incredible journey…. Everyone says this time it’s different…..but this time it really is… different that is. We used human ingenuity, manual dexterity and laser focused eyesight and created something that no one else will have the time and patience for.”

Over the past week, Ray’s vision came to life as his collection of quirky, yellow, circle headed characters called Del Mundos took over the timeline following its free mint.

Everyone from T.M.A to DFarmer has been posting about the project, and best of all, many people who appear to be new to NFTs may have stumbled into this free mint, scored their first win, and genuinely fallen in love with the space.

“I love it when a new mint does good,” T,M.A tweeted. “The vibes, the energy, the community forming, the rares selling, the collectors collecting It’s a different energy. I know there are other ways to make more money than NFTs these days. But a NFT win just hits so much harder than any other win.”

At first glance, many might assume Del Mundos is just another generative art project with its 178 listed traits. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. This collection wasn’t spun up in an afternoon.

It took RayD3lMundo years to bring Del Mundos to life, not because the NFTs were generated by code, but because they weren’t. Ray built the base characters and traits by hand in the real world using upcycled materials like plastic bottles and fabric. The physical character was posed and photographed thousands of times to create the 10,000 piece collection, with custom bios written for every single Mundo.

“We hope you will feel the heart and soul in every detail,” Ray wrote. “All of the art: the traits, base models and backgrounds were created by hand in real life. In a world of generative AI, we decided to tread the hard human path.”

As AI’s presence in crypto continues to grow and the timeline becomes increasingly doomer about the future, a project like Del Mundos is a reminder that something uniquely human still has a place in the world and can still win.

Tomorrow, Del Mundos will host its first Twitter Space, simply titled “Hello,” at 11 a.m. EST. The Gazette will be in attendance and will bring readers a full recap. Stay tuned for updates.
