Math met art on ApeChain recently after Art Blocks featured artist Owen McAteer, aka Motus Art, dropped his first ever collection on $Ape and everyone can ape into it tonight!

Since 2022, Motus Art has been experimenting with code to create generative art projects that blend the precision of math with the creative expression of crypto. Now, he’s bringing those ideas to ApeChain with Pulsewidth!

“My artistic practice is perpetually inspired by mathematics,” Motus told the Gazette. “I delve into the hidden elegance within numbers, the intricate logic of natural systems, and the transformative power of algorithms, translating these elements into animated visual outputs. Pulsewidth stands as the culmination of these explorations. It's an animated visual artwork driven by layers of mathematical algorithms and blending modes, rendered in a distinctive grid dithering style that I've named PWM. By mixing together several 'simple' rules, the resulting output achieves an unpredictably complex yet undeniably recognizable aesthetic.”
Last Thursday, Motus Art debuted his Pulsewidth collection at ApeChain’s Artist Showcase at 21 Mercer during NFT NYC and he invited attendees to literally make their mark on the math.

“I felt compelled to bring something truly special to this IRL experience. My aim was to demystify Pulsewidth and the broader concept of generative art through an engaging, hands-on approach. To achieve this, I built a custom MIDI controller, placing the viewer directly in control of the artwork. In real-time, they could manipulate input values, subtly altering the visual output of the piece. I deliberately kept each value's specific effect a secret, fostering an atmosphere of exploration and playful discovery.”

Since Thursday’s event, 121 of the 250-piece Pulsewidth collection has been minted. Tonight, everyone in the $Ape ecosystem is invited to mint theirs for 50 $APE or $29 USD.
“Pulsewidth is one of the first generative artworks to find its home on ApeChain, and I truly hope it marks the dawn of many more innovative creations to come,” Motus said. “It feels like generative art and the world of NFTs were simply made for each other. Imagine: an autonomous system, born from an artist's vision, living directly on the blockchain. This unique synergy means that as a collector, you're not just acquiring a piece; you're directly participating in its very creation.”

The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow Motus Art and let you know what he does around the swamp next. Stay tuned for updates!
I'm not usually one for the whole NFT thing, but this actually sounds... cool? The way he talks about "hidden elegance" and translating math into visuals... I dunno, it kinda gives me the same feeling I got when I finally beat Flappy Bird – that tiny little jolt of "I get it!" even though it's probably all just random chance and pixels. PWM thing is kinda weird too, but hey, if it works, it works! Might have to check this out. Thanks for sharing!
