In Chinese culture, 2026 is the Year of the Horse, but in the Ethereum ecosystem, it’s already shaping up to be the Year of Milady after Vitalik Buterin swapped his profile picture to an esoteric anime girl and shared the two things he hopes to accomplish this year, along with how he plans to do it.

A new year, a new profile photo, and a fresh set of resolutions from Ethereum’s Vitalik quickly took over the timeline on Thursday, all centered around one core mission:“To build the world computer that serves as a central infrastructure piece of a more free and open internet.”

“Welcome to 2026! Milady is back,” Vitalk tweeted before getting into his goals for Ethereum this year, which include making the chain useable, useable at scale, and actually decentralized.

“This needs to happen at both (a) the blockchain layer, including the software we use to run and talk to the blockchain, and (b) the application layer. All of these pieces must be improved - they are already being improved, but they must be improved more. Fortunately, we have powerful tools on our side - but we need to apply them, and we will. Wishing everyone an exciting 2026. Milady.”

With that, builders across Ethereum including MachiBigBrother and KOKO from Ape Church voiced their support for Vitalik’s mission, as Milady NFTs were sent flying following the tweet. The collection reclaimed a 1 ETH floor, marking a 37% price jump on the day, according to OpenSea data.

“It's going to be a good year,” Milday Tim Clancy tweeted. “Milady.”

Following Vitalik’s tweet and Milady update, the project's founder Charlotte Fang retweeted a post calling Vitalk’s PFP change more than just a switch to another J-Peg, it’s a wartime PFP, "a crypto-cultural meme and symbolic practice that sees builders adopt the Milady Maker avatar during moments of crisis, controversy, or leadership tension," according to Wiki Remilia.

The Gazette will continue to follow Vitalik and the Miladys in 2026 and will let you know what they do next. Stay tuned for updates!
