PREMIER PUNK: Yuga Labs Announced That Nina Chanel Abney Will Be The First Artist To Join Its Punks In Residence Program!
Yuga Labs announced that Nina Chanel Abney will be the first artist to join its Punks in Residence program, which will explore what it means to be a Punk and culminate in a series of in-person art exhibits later this year.
On Tuesday, Yuga Labs introduced the Yugaverse to its new Punks in Residence initiative, which will explore the essence of being a Punk while also amplifying artists in the Web3 world.
“Nina Chanel Abney kicks off the program as the first artist for Punk in Residence, where she’ll spend her tenure working with the CryptoPunks team to create a limited-series of digital collectibles, incorporating her distinctively bold style and perspective into a playful reimagining of the CryptoPunk traits,” Yuga Labs announced on its CryptoPunks Hub. “Abney will present her work in forthcoming 2024 solo exhibitions at The School: Jack Shainman Gallery in Kinderhook, NY; Jeffrey Deitch in Los Angeles, CA; and Pond Society, Shanghai.”
While we do not know what Abney will create with the Yuga Labs team, we do know that the Punks in Residence program will be about bringing the 'Punk spirit' to multi-media, wearables, generative art, code art, audio, AI, new media, video, and immersive art.
As Yuga Labs' inaugural artist, Abney was allowed to select a Punk of her own, and she chose CryptoPunk #72.
“It was extremely difficult for me to choose,” she told Yuga Labs. “But this punk just felt easygoing and cool, yet a bit mysterious.”
Following today’s announcement, Abney changed her profile photo on Twitter to her new Punk!
After today's announcement. Yuga Labs’ CryptoPunks General Manager, Naughtalie Stone, said that she plans to host a Space with Abney soon go over her work and all things Punks in Residence.
The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow this initiative and will let you know when more information about the program becomes available. Stay tuned for updates!
