THESE LITTLE PIGGIES ALMOST WENT TO MARKET: Meebits Were Originally Going To Be A Collection Of 20K Pigs Called Snoutz!

What if Meebits were pigs instead of people?

Well, believe it or not, the Meebs were almost a collection called “Snoutz,” complete with 20,000 voxel piggies.

As Meebits celebrate their fifth anniversary, the team is taking holders down memory lane, revealing early art, edits, and ideas that show what could have been.

“Meebits Birthday Week lore/ @larvalabs has shared before that Meebits were originally intended to be all pigs,” Meebits tweeted. “What nobody has seen before are the different types of pigs they created. This is the first public reveal of the prototype Robot Snoutz and Skeleton Snoutz.”

In an interview with Meebits’ new owner Segito from February 2025, Larva Labs co-founders Matt Hall and John Watkinson explained that they wanted their second project to be immediately recognizable. Their first idea? Pigs, because they were  simple, iconic, and could be similar to how KAWS built a brand around a bear like character.

“It was originally 100% Pigs and the name was Snoutz with a Z,” Matt explained. “ it was fun. The name came easiliy and we were dressing up these pigs… but then we were getting some people were like its all pigs? Then we realized not everyone wants to be a pig here. So many we cant make this all pigs.”

With that, Larva Labs decided against going full hog, opting instead for the 20,000 piece voxel collection we know today, featuring humans inspired by New York City, along with elephants, skeletons, and robots.

Still, 711 pigs made their way into the final collection, along with a handful of snoutz inspired traits, and today, they’re some of the most popular Voxels around!

“ I feel like you can see the DNA of Snoutz,” John said. “the pigs are the most developed and have their own culture within Meebits. They’re almost like a subculture of Meebits.”

Looking ahead, Sergito said that he can’t wait to share more meeb-ories with the community and shine a light on the detail and care that went into creating Web3’s first secondary collection.

“One of the biggest surprises when we took over Meebs last year was going through all the design files that Matt and John shared with us,” he tweeted. “The amount of time and effort that they put into Meebits is incredible. Years of ideas and traits and things that the public has never seen. We’re excited to honor their legacy by sharing some of the many Meebits Origins files that we have in the vault. I hope these give everyone a better understanding of the depth of the work and the significance of the collection.”

From Snoutz to Meebs, it’s been quite the voxel adventure! The Gazette will continue to follow the Meebits all week as it celebrates five years onchain. Stay tuned for updates!
