ANCHORS DOWN!: OpenSea Delays Its TGE As The Marketplace Adjusts Its Course Because Of Rough Market Conditions!

On Monday, OpenSea Founder and CEO Devin Finzer took to the timeline to tell his onchain crew that the platform would be charting a new course and delaying its $SEA token generation event due to rough market conditions.

"A delay is a delay,” he tweeted. “I’m not going to dress it up, and i know how it lands. the reality is that market conditions are challenging across crypto right now, and $SEA only launches once.  @openseafdn could force the original date, or we could ensure every piece is in place and make this moment what this community deserves.”

Tonight, Finzer did not say when $SEA will launch. But he did announce that the platform’s loathed rewards seasons, which critics called fee farming, were finished.

He also said the platform plans to offer users an optional fee refund for seasons 3–6, collect no fees for the next 60 days on OpenSea, and meaningfully consider users’ earned Treasures from all these reward seasons once $SEA officially drops.

“I’ve been building opensea for almost a decade,” Finzer tweeted. “when this started, we were two people and the only thing you could trade on OS was cryptokitties. i’ve watched this space go from a niche curiosity to billions in volume to where we are today…. we have huge ambitions as a company, and we’re here for the long game. making all of non-custodial crypto delightful on mobile is just the beginning. that means we have to set a very high bar for everything we do, and it’s why i’m so protective of delivering a launch that’s worthy of this community and everything we’re putting into this.”

As the Gazette previously reported, OpenSea’s token was first teased back in December 2024 and followed by the launch of OpenSea 2.0, which expanded the platform from just an NFT marketplace into a multichain dApp where traders can swap tokens and buy J-pegs.

Back in October 2025, Finzer also announced that 50% of the eventual $SEA supply will be allocated to the community, with a large portion distributed through an initial claim that rewards both longtime users and participants in OpenSea rewards programs.

At the time, Finzer also teased that $SEA will be deeply integrated into the platform, but tonight we still do not know what that will look like.

The Gazette will continue to follow all things OpenSea and will let you know when more information about those refunds for seasons 3–6 becomes available. Stay tuned for updates!
