What a difference a year can make.

On Thursday, Yuga Labs’ Michael Figge stopped by the Bored Ape Yacht Club for the first Meet At The Clubhouse space of the year to reflect on how far the metaverse has come.

“This time last year it was a completely different picture, he said “We were wrapping up Project Dragon on our way to the Guiness Book of world records. You know that was real because we missed the first time and got it the second. It’s been seven months since we started leaving Otherside open and we are shipping updates every month and micro updates every week. The platform is coming to life.”

While building in public hasn’t always been easy, Figge said Yuga Labs has continued to make progress, welcoming more than 80 communities into Otherside in recent months, partnering with Amazon, and keeping the world always open, welcoming, and free to explore.

"This is a unique thing you can find here that you cant really find in Web3," he said. "This is the only platform that’s social first and it brings in all the different systems, avatars, and NFTs. We are trying to bring all of the blockchains on here and visualize it in an all new way.”

Looking ahead, Figge teased that the Yuga Labs team is planning to ship a new January update in the coming weeks, and it will be a big one.

“It’s something that can help proliferate not just Otherside, but the club itself,” he said, as the team continues working toward its ultimate goal, a permissionless place for creators to create.

“For Otherside our goal remains the same. You should be able to publish and you should be able to create. Success looks like you don’t need to notify any of us to publish, you should be able to do that on your own. Kind of like how anyone can mint an NFT and it shows up on OpenSea. But to do that, you need a lot of work to make sure its automatic. And I think we are about to see the first signs of that this year. Everybody is building and they don’t need us to do it.”

The Gazette will continue to follow all things Otherside and will let you know when more information about this month’s January update is revealed. Stay tuned for updates!
