From pixels to the pitch!

As the World Cup gets ready to kick off across the Americas this summer, the Meebits are taking the field with a collection of digital, soccer playing voxel avatars that can also be redeemed for physical collectibles.

“Introducing Meebits FĂștbol. Taking the field on February 25th in partnership with @opensea and @OthersideMeta,” The Meebits tweeted this morning. “Meebits FĂștbol collectibles are web3's first event-specific playable avatars that combine the excitement and collectability of blind box toys with the advantages of onchain composability and liquidity of NFTs. These are Otherside avatars with optional physical redemptions.”

The first set of Meebits FĂștbol avatars, dropping on February 25th, will feature voxels from six different countries. Each nation will include 10 distinct players, all with their own unique looks and traits. Collectors will then be able to mix and match these Meebs and compete for prizes in tournaments this spring.

“With the World Cup coming to America this summer, we created digital Meebits blind box toys featuring national uniforms which are playable on Otherside, so you can represent your country online,” Meebits CEO Sergito wrote. “Having these as NFTs also allow us to create contests and reward collectors while the tournament is played. Lastly, anybody who wants the physical figurine will have the option to redeem for it. For those who choose to keep the digital version, it will act like a memento of this year’s tournament similar to collecting a physical jersey. We came to NFTs for the possibilities that digital asset ownership unlock, and we are excited to explore and have fun alongside you via Meebits Futbol.”

As of tonight, it is not yet known which countries will be part of the first drop or how much each avatar will cost. However, the Meebits confirmed this is only the first group of nations, with additional characters planned for release later this spring.

The Gazette will continue to follow Meebits FĂștbol and will let you know when more information about the “beautiful game” is revealed. Stay tuned for updates.
