As Pudgy Penguins get put on trial, accused of infringing on PEI Licensing’s Original Penguin trademarks, one community member waddled to the stand, and the timeline, to highlight just how “similar” these two companies’ flightless birds look.
Things have been a bit hot at the igloo since PEI Licensing filed a lawsuit against Pudgy Penguins, claiming the NFT brand infringed on its trademarks.
And while litigation is no laughing matter, Pudgy Penguin Swanny couldn’t help but giggle at how “funny” Original Penguin’s black-and-white mascot looks compared to Pudgy’s Pax.
“I woke up to the news of the lawsuit between original penguin and pudgy,” she said. “There was a meme of the original penguin with the pudgy colors circulating in a group chat and I found it so funny as it looked like a penguin from Temu."
After that, she decided to reimagine her Lil Pudgy, a cute pink penguin with a swan floatie and a beanie, in the style of PEI’s Original Penguin.
“I am my penguin, my penguin is me,” she tweeted.
The post quickly went viral, and Penguins everywhere loved the new look and wanted to see their Pudgys redesigned in the Original Penguin style. So Swanny hit up fellow Pudgy holders Swiftie and the Pengu Asia community, and together they began transforming everyone’s fat flightless birds into OGs.
“It kind of just snowballed,” Swanny said. “Myself and Swiftie from pudgy Malaysia probably pushed out 60+ final edits between us, with I’d say 300+ generations to get the final versions. Many more used the prompt to generate their own.”
As these funny looking penguins took over the timeline, Swanny said her favorite part was getting to huddle up with even more Penguins.
“Pengu Asia is the heartbeat of the greater pudgy penguin community, and whilst taking over the timeline with memes was fun, what was more special was sending the community telegram around and having new members join,” she said. “Just goes to show how strong the pudgy community really is, no matter how bad the market is.”
