A Meeb-starpiece is about to take its place in a museum after a historic institution with a track record of displaying NFTs added a Multicultural Meebit to its collection.

On Thursday, Meebits announced that Meebit #7112 had entered the collection of the Francisco Carolinum Museum in Linz, Austria, and will soon go on display at the 231 year old institution.

“This marks the first placement of a Meebit in a museum collection,” the project tweeted.  “Meebits are Art.”

Meebit #7112 is a 12 trait female Meeb with purple dyed hair, a halter top, skirt, and headphones, giving her one of the collection's most distinctive looks which is exactly what the museum was looking for.

“We are honored by the opportunity to place Meebit #7112 in this museum collection,” Meebits CEO Sergitto told the Gazette. “Meebits are art, and great art belongs in museums. It was a pleasure to work with @Tschuuuuly and the museum’s curation board to pick this Meebit. One which fully represent the diversity and beautiful range of traits that Larva Labs put into the series.”

With the addition of Meebit #7112, the permanent collection at the Francisco Carolinum Museum now includes several NFTs, including a Normie, a Squiggle, a Winds of Yawanawa, and other notable works of onchain art.

For years, the Francisco Carolinum Museum has been at the forefront of the digital art movement, showcasing and collecting NFT works dating back to 2021.

“OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH presents PROOF OF ART, the world’s first museum exhibition on the history of NFTs and digital art,” the museum wrote at the time.  “Congruously to the topic the show is viewed offline at the Francisco Carolinum but also online in Cryptovoxels, a blockchain-based virtual world. In light of the developments surrounding NFTs in art and the art market, a retrospective of their history – and why they are suddenly on everyone’s lips – becomes compelling.”

The Gazette will continue to follow Meebit #7112's journey at the Francisco Carolinum Museum and will let you know when and where NFTs from across Web3 make their debut in galleries, museums, and beyond. Stay tuned for updates!
