HE LIKES THE APE!: Justin Bieber Bought A Bored Ape For $1.3 Million Four Years Ago, And The Timeline Is Still Talking About It!

From Polymarket to random Kols, the timeline spent the last few days reminding everyone of one thing, Justin Bieber bought a Bored Ape four years ago for 500 ETH, or roughly $1.3 million USD, and today, he’s down bad.

The tweets even made their way into one of Beeple’s latest Everydays pieces, titled “JUSTIN BIEBER'S APE COMEBACK ARC,” which features a Bored Ape suited Bieber performing on stage alongside photos of his sad looking primate.

But while it’s true Bieber is underwater on the trade, it’s also true he overpaid the moment he hit “buy.”

On January 29, 2022, Bieber purchased Bored Ape #3001 for nearly five times the floor price, which sat around 100 ETH, or roughly $260,000 USD, at the time.

Even back then, Apes around the swamp were left scratching their heads.

Some, like BoredApe93, pointed out that the number 3001 could be a nod to Bieber’s March 1 (3/01) birthday. Others looked for deeper meaning.

Then, in August 2022, Gordon Goner offered a simpler explanation on the Full Send Podcast, saying Bieber bought the Ape because “he looked lonely.”

That reasoning tracks.

Around the time of the purchase, Bieber shared his primate alongside lyrics from his song Lonely, suggesting that an emotional connection drove his decision.

And that’s the key point most on the timeline are missing.

Bieber didn’t buy for traits, to flip, or for a future return on investment.

He bought what he liked and he could easily afford to do it, with a net worth of $300 million.

“Friendly reminder that ‘he could’ve bought a better ape’ … doesn’t apply,” BAYC member Ape Father tweeted back in 2022. “Justin has more money than you can imagine. he wanted one he liked … this is pure flex … he don’t give a fuck about rarity."

The idea that NFTs are tied to identity and self expression, not just investments, has always been core to the Bored Ape Yacht Club vision.

In a February 2022 interview with Farokh, the club’s founders explained it this way:

“We envisioned someone’s Bored Ape as their digital identity, and their access to a club….We’re bullish on the interoperable metaverse. In a lot of ways, it’s already here, with how people have adopted NFTs as their digital identity across platforms. But there’s so much more room to grow, and ways to facilitate its adoption.”

While Bieber hasn’t posted about his Ape in some time, he still holds Bored Ape #3001, along with a blue fur Mutant, three Otherdeeds, two Doodles, a World of Women NFT, and over 146 ETH in his main wallet, 0xe21dc18513e3e68a52f9fcdacfd56948d43a11c6.

The Gazette will continue to follow Bieber and will let you know if and when he returns to the NFT space. Stay tuned for updates.
