SPOTLIGHT: Artist Jeff Kelly Turns A Thrift Store Painting Into A Del Mundo Masterpiece!

Amid racks of clothes, outdated appliances, and collectibles someone once swore would be valuable, a Canadian thrift store briefly became home to a one of a kind Del Mundo masterpiece, proving people powered positivity is alive and well in the Great White North.

Last week, Canadian artist and longtime NFT enthusiast Jeff Kelly purchased a second hand painting and reworked it to feature his Del Mundo, transforming an overlooked canvas into an NFT inspired work of art.

 

Kelly told the Gazette that the Del Mundos’ upcycling roots inspired him to rework the painting and add one of his quirky looking, cheess headed characters into the scene.

“I originally planned to do a straight Del Mundo painting, but then I got the idea to try the Del Mundo recycling technique instead,” he said.  “So I headed to a thrift store to hunt for something workable. I was open to any painting, really, but I especially wanted one that still had its frame.”

There he found a landscape featuring flowery fields and a waterfall, but he knew it was missing something. So he took it home and painted Del Mundo #4263 into the scene.

 

But Kelly wasn’t done yet.

 

"I then snuck the 'new' piece back into the thrift store and placed it right back on the shelf where I found the original,” he said.  “I haven’t been back to check yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s already gone. It’s a Del Mundo! Who wouldn’t want recycled gold?!”

 

 While the artwork’s new owner remains unknown, Kelly said sharing the piece with the Del Mundos community has been something else!

“This is the first time I've done something like this and will definitely do some more,” he said. “It was a cool experience! I get such a rush sharing my art on the timeline and seeing all the love and positivity come back.”
